A Glimpse Of Paradise - Belinda Xia Illustration

3:05 pm

Recently I've discovered an amazing illustrator by the name of Belinda Xia. Belinda is 25, her favourite colour is cobalt and she can't live without peanut butter! Her favourite colours to draw with are black and white. When I discovered her work, I just new I had to share her with you all.

  • How did you get started in illustration? I've always enjoyed drawing since primary school, but it wasn't until late last year that I thought I'd give it a proper try. since then, feedback has been so encouraging that I'm I continued with it.
  • What do you enjoy most about it? The satisfaction of being able to translate beautiful objects into my own artwork. I draw for myself, but it's always lovely when there's an appreciative audience!
  • What was the first illustration you ever did? A fashion illustration of a pair of Christopher Kane demin shorts. It was one the first posts I did on my Instagram account and they liked it, which for me at that early stage was such a high!

  • What does illustration mean to you? A creative expression of my personality. I can say without a doubt it's my passion and if tomorrow nobody noticed my drawings, I would still continue.
  • Who or what is your biggest inspiration for illustration? All the lovely things around us! There is a never ending supply of beautiful things - be it fashion, people or objects that are waiting to be captured in inks and watercolours!
  • What is the most challenging thing you've had to face since starting illustration? My own doubt - you really are your own worst critic! Thankfully, I've got a really strong and supportive group of friends and family.
  • What do you dislike most, and like most about what you create? I don't think I dislike anything about it, except maybe the mess I make sometimes! I love that I now have a collection of every single drawing I've ever done - and that I'm proud of each and every one.

  • What does Fashion mean to you? Fashion is probably what catalysed my illustration dreams. I kept seeing so many beautiful pieces and since I couldn't afford most of them, I could only do the next best thing - draw them! I will continue to be obsessed.
  • How would you define your personal style? Classic and styled - I tend to focus more on fit and detail rather than the trends. And I prefer black!

  • What are your favourite colours to work with, and why? I get the most use out of my black ink - I think because I find it more challenging to create different shades and textures out of a single colour. I've also got an awesome royal purple!

  • What is the best piece of advice you've been given? Stop thinking about it and just do it!
  • Do you have any advice for anyone who wants to do what you do? Just start! It only took one drawing for me to see how much I enjoyed it. However, don't do it for anybody else but you - it is your passion.
  • What are your illustration goals? At the moment I'm just taking each step as it comes. I've recently launched my etsy store - BelindaXIllustration which is so very exciting! I'm aiming to keep challenging myself but I'm very open to where it'll all take me.

"Don't discount the little wins along the way. Kind words from strangers and framing your first piece are all successes!"
